What is National Donut Day you ask, and how does it affect you?
Read ahead for that and more information!
During WWI volunteers working with the Salvation Army would pass out donuts to the servicemen, lifting their spirits and providing sustenance on the front lines. These brave volunteers were know as Donut Lassies.
During the Great Depression the Chicago Salvation Army created a fundraiser to help the needy, boost morale as well as honoring the Donut Lassies. That fundraiser was the impetus of National Donut Day.
Since its inception in 1938, National Donut Day has fallen on the first Friday of every June. Many businesses will be giving away free donuts to celebrate the occasion.
When you’re out and about collecting those FREE donuts, take a moment to appreciate that the donut you’re eating today represents a smile on a soldier’s face.
But what else does a donut represent?
Many people associate donuts with police officers, but why is that? The answer is simple! During a time when many establishments had limited hours, police officers working the graveyard shift had few options available for acquiring a much needed cup of coffee. However, bakeries kept early hours making them ideal, and hence, an iconic pairing was forever linked! The image of a police car parked in front of a donut shop became a meme before memes existed!
Now that you’ve learned that brief history, please recall that FREE donut you were savoring earlier, and think about how many donuts $650,000 could buy…
What’s the correlation you ask? I’m here to tell you!
$650,000 is the amount Officer Timothy John Ellis cost the tax payers of Sagamore Hills by making poor choices & creating his own rules.
Wasteful spending for a situation that could have been easily avoided. What kind of stewardship from a public servant is this? Don’t we expect better?
Something to chew on…
